Adult Aquatic Programs
BEGINNING ADULT (45 min.)
This class is for adults who don’t feel at ease in the water. Non-swimmers are taught basic swimming skills and water safety. Register Online.
INTERMEDIATE ADULT (45 min.)
This is a class for adults who are comfortable in the water and who would like to work on stroke development and endurance. It’s great for those who have swimming skills and who would like to improve their techniques.
AFYAP (45 min.)
Arthritis Foundation YMCA Aquatic Program
This class involves specific movements related to the joints and surrounding muscles affected by arthritis. These exercises help maintain normal joint movement, relieve stiffness and can help to restore flexibility and movement. The three general categories of exercises utilized are: range of motion, strengthening and conditioning. Register Online
AQUATIC BOOT CAMP (60 min.)
Aquatic Boot Camp is a HIGH INTENSITY water fitness program that provides the benefits of a pool, little to no impact on joints and expands lung capacity, as well as the benefits of weight and resistance training of a traditional gym.
AQUA EXERCISE (60 min.)
This program consists of a wide variety of exercises developed specifically for the water. This is an effective way of using the surfaces of one’s body to increase water resistance, to increase cardiovascular flow and to develop the muscular system of the body. Appropriate for swimmers and non-swimmers. Register Online
DEEP WATER EXERCISE (60 min.)
This class is a comprehensive, no impact water exercise program using an aqua belt to assist buoyancy and balance in the deep end of the pool. The deepwater allows more body surface to maintain pressure against the water. This allows for a weight exercise style, which tones the body, works the cardiovascular system and builds endurance. ENDURANCE SWIMMING (60 min)
This program is designed to help you become a better swimmer all around! In the group setting, the coach will focus on stroke refinement, endurance, and helping you achieve your swimming goals.
GARDEN STATE MASTERS SWIMMING
Masters is for adults 18+ who are looking for a place to train to improve their overall health and fitness. This is NOT a learn-to-swim or lessons program for adults. These are structured workouts aimed at better preparing swimmers and triathletes for competitions, however there is an ability level for everyone at our practices and we encourage those looking to return to the sport to come out of retirement!

MASTERS SWIMMING (60 min.)
This Masters Swimming program is designed to help people get and stay in shape while improving their strokes and overall swimming skills. Utilizing various training principals such as effective heart rate training methods, training cycles, interval training and other proven training techniques will allow athletes to continually raise their fitness level and improve their proficiency. For those swimmers interested in competition, you may register with the N.J. Masters team and participate in meets through the U.S. Masters Swimming program. Swimmers may also be eligible to swim in the YMCA Masters National swimming competition. Competing in meets is not required to participate in the Masters Swimming program. Register Online
Looking for a safe, low-impact exercise program you can participate in throughout your pregnancy? The Somerville Family YMCA is now offering a class combining low intensity swimming, water jogging and aqua fitness taught by a certified Aqua Exercise Instructor. The ability to swim is not required because the class is done in chest deep water. Exercising in the water is ideal for pregnant women because the water’s buoyancy requires you to support only 50% of your body weight, it reduces the risk of stress related injuries, and the compression of the water is soothing on joints and muscles that are stressed during pregnancy. PRIVATE LESSONS (30 min.)
Private lessons are available at all branches. Lessons are available for students ages 4 and up, and can be customized upon request. Semi-private lessons are also available for two students of the same ability. Please contact the facility where you are interested in taking the lessons for available times and days. Contact the Aquatic Director at each branch for more information.
SWIM INC. (60 min.)
SWIM Inc. is a non-profit volunteer organization that offers a free program for adults with muscular impairment due to such causes as stroke, polio, MS, MD, arthritis and other causes. If you find it difficult or impossible to exercise on land, try this self-directed water exercise program. For more information, contact a Membership Services Representative at the Bridgewater Family YMCA.
TRIATHLON SWIM CLINIC
This program is designed to help you establish swimming goals, identify key areas for improvement, develop a plan for success, open water swimming tips, and event strategy and planning.
WATER PILATES (60 min.)
Pilates, creatively adapted to the water, develops strength, flexibility and improves posture. This program builds a stronger body core with fluidity and grace. It appeals to a variety of ages and fitness levels. Register Online
WATER WALKING (45 min.)
This class contains a variety of walking styles enhanced by arm movements, using the buoyancy and resistance of the water. It is designed to improve posture, balance and breathing while gently toning the body. This program is held in the shallow end of the pool. Register Online
